Earth's population to hit 7 billion people, Think back to when the first caveman and cavewoman were sitting around in their cave, bored and lonely. We wonder if they envisioned the sheer magnitude of the decision they were about to make.

Fast forward to 2012 and 2 people has become 7 billion. According to the United Nations, the world population will reach 7 billion by the end of the month. Sadly, no one is celebrating as it has taken only 12 years to jump from 6 billion to 7 billion. With rapid growth like this, our planet is inching dangerously close to exhausting both space and resources. Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of the Earth Institute, laments the asymptotic population climb:

"This is a crowded planet. This is trouble, frankly..."

Oh boy. Is it time to talk about creepy population control techniques a la "Logan's Run" or "The Lottery?" Thankfully, Sachs has a more humane idea -- reduce infant mortality. But wouldn't that increase the population?

"When children survive predictably then parents choose to have fewer children...In the high-income and most of the middle-income countries, population is stabilized. It's in the poorest countries -- where you don't have access to health care, family planning, where the children die in large numbers, when the girls aren't able to stay in school -- that the population is soaring."

So, like any problem, the solution lies in creating a healthy quality of life for all Earth's inhabitants. Hopefully, we will look at his benchmark as another example as to why we as a species need to continue to evolve intelligently and spend our time and energy striking a symbiotic balance with our planet. Or else how will we survive to see the inevitable "Twilight" reboot?!
