Lisa Irwin’s Family Commemorates Birthday; Brothers Interviewed

Lisa Irwin’s Family Commemorates Birthday; Brothers Interviewed - The family of missing baby Lisa Irwin will commemorate her first birthday privately today, one of the family's attorneys John Picerno told the Kansas City Star yesterday. "It's going to be a tough day for them," he said. He asked that the public respect the family's privacy.

Little Lisa's maternal grandfather David Netz, Jr., said in an interview last week that he expected Lisa's birthday to be the "oh-my-God moment." He cried as he told the reporter, ""I can't even imagine what that day will be like. What will we do? How will we get through that? I don't even know how to ask Debbie and Jeremy what we should do or how to help them through that."

There's been no announcement of any special public events planned for today to commemorate baby Lisa's first birthday. The Justice Dept. advises parents of missing children to take advantage of events such as missed birthdays to keep a missing child's name and face fresh in the news. In Lisa Irwin's case there may be no need for special events; the investigation has remained prominent in the news since she was reported missing.

On the eve of Lisa's birthday, Kansas City police were finally able to do follow-up interviews with missing baby Lisa Irwin's 5 and 8-year-old half-brothers. The older of the two boys had been interviewed for 50 minutes the night Lisa was reported missing from her crib; the younger boy was interviewed for 30 minutes. Since then, the family has not made the boys available for follow-up interviews until yesterday.

Yesterday's individual interviews of the two boys were conducted by a forensic interviewer flown in by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The interviews lasted two hours and were videotaped. Neither police nor the family attorney have indicated whether the interviews disclosed any new or useful information. Picerno did say the family is relieved the interviews have been done. He said the interviews went well and there will be no need for them to be interviewed again. His co-counsel Joe Tacopina promised to issue a statement today.

"Wild Bill" Stanton, a former detective who is serving as a consultant to baby Lisa's parents ,Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin, said one of the boys heard a tapping noise the night Lisa disappeared. But he says he has not spoken to the boys about what they may have seen or heard that night at all. Bradley and Irwin have not spoken with the boys in depth, he said, for fear of looking like they were coaching the children.

In an interview last month, Bradley said the boys said they heard noises the night their baby sister was reported missing, but she didn't know if it was "before we went to sleep or after."
