11 11 11 - the perfect day to wear corduroy
11 11 11 - the perfect day to wear corduroy - Today is a very easy day to remember, which is why more than the usual number of weddings are taking place. For many in Britain, mid-morning today is a time for quiet reflection, a chance to pay silent tribute to those who fought and died so that we may enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted. For others, however, November 11 this year is a rare, palindromic chance to get married, communicate with the spirit world and/or wear corduroy.
Just after elevenses, at 11.11.11 on 11/11/11, the time and date will read the same backwards as forwards. There have already been 10 palindrome moments this century, but this is the first same-numbered palindrome. The next won’t occur for another 100 years.
Inevitably, a certain type of person is very excited about this. On this date 100 years ago, a cold snap made temperatures in Kansas City drop from 76F in the morning to 11F by the end of the day.
Spooky? Not as spooky as one internet group that believes 11.11 is the calling card of the Spirit Guardians, a collection of 1,111 fun-loving celestial beings who use digital clocks to remind earthlings of their existence.
“They asked for, and were given, the 11:11 signal as a trademark,” claims 1111spiritguardians.com. “They have been assisting folks for many centuries. These guys are a bunch of special angels.”
Clearly there is something universally satisfying about a tidy date. A “numerologist”, Sonia Ducie, has been widely quoted stating that, “One plus one equals two, so it’s all about collaboration, and this year’s date is a wake-up call for all of us to collaborate.”
For men, on the other hand, today appears to be a convenient way of remembering their wedding anniversary. A chapel in Las Vegas is juggling three weddings at both 11.11am and 11.11pm (the couples get 11 roses, 11 lillies, 11 photos and can view their wedding online for 11 days), while Gretna Green in Scotland is hosting five times as many weddings as normal.
Not to be left out, Hollywood is releasing a horror film entitled 11-11-11, while The Corduroy Appreciation Club is celebrating the “date which most closely resembles corduroy” (11 is made up of straight lines).
Of course, if you write out 2011 in full the palindrome no longer works. Now, if only we had the weather details for Kansas City in November 1111. And an idea as to how the Spirit Guardians made contact before electricity.
