Jessica Biel: I wish I'd landed 'Notebook' role - As with love, life as an actor means always having that one that got away. And for Jessica Biel, it sounds like it was the lead role of Allie from "The Notebook," which ended up going to Rachel McAdams.

Ryan Gosling, memorably, played her paramour from the wrong side of town, Noah.

Biel, 29, tells Elle magazine in its December issue, "'The Notebook'...That's one I wanted so badly. I was in the middle of shooting 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' and I auditioned with Ryan Gosling in my trailer - covered in blood."

Needless to say, that probably wasn't the best way to make an impression on director Nick Cassavetes, who "put me through the ringer in an interesting, excitingly creative way," Biel recalls.

"But," she continues, "there's a million that get away. We're gluttons for punishment. It's just rejection."

If the rejection ever got too rough, Biel says she's not opposed to dropping out of acting altogether to pursue other interests.

"I'd love to write," she tells Elle. "I wrote a lot of short stories and poetry when I was a kid. That was my creative outlet. I've written a short film, and I've written poetry."

Whether Justin Timberlake, her ex-boyfriend and potentially still her current flame, is the subject of any of these musings, Biel doesn't say. She won't even confirm what's going on between them.

"A girl doesn't kiss and tell," Biel tells Elle. As for how she ended up dating a fellow star, she says, "I think those people are the people you meet and so it just kind of happens. Let me tell you: It never happens on purpose."

Parents kids lie facebook - Parents kids lie facebook, A new study from Harvard, New York University and Berkeley researchers finds that "many parents knowingly allow their children to lie about their age--in fact, often help them to do so--in order to gain access to age-restricted sites in violation of those sites' terms of service." The finding comes even after a Facebook executive told the Senate that it wasn't allowed, so it's no wonder how lots of underage kids are signing up for social media accounts with little trouble. Opinions are mixed about the restrictions put in place (and currently under review) by the Federal Trade Commission that forbid young kids from joining sites like Facebook, but some of the potential consequences — like child pornography, contact with pedophiles and bullying — are deeply disturbing.

Though the specific figures vary, the number of under-age kids on Facebook is in the millions. In May, a Consumer Reports annual survey reported that 17.5 million children under the age of 13, the minimum as determined by the FTC's Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), were using Facebook regularly. Published Tuesday in the internet-research journal First Monday, the new study "Why Parents Help Their Children Lie to Facebook About Age" explores the role of parents in helped lower that number suggests that the number is even higher today, perhaps because of COPPA's unintended consequences. On average, 87 percent parents knew their 9- to 12-years-old kids signed up for an account and 66 percent of the parents helped their kids lie about their age to skirt around Facebook's terms and conditions.

Problematically, Facebook says that the onus of preventing kids from breaking the rules is partially on the parents. "Just as parents are always teaching and reminding kids how to cross the road safely," Noyes recently told The Atlantic Wire, "talking about internet safety should be just as important a lesson to learn." However, Noyes supports these kinds of research efforts. "The report makes important points particularly in relation to parents that actively assist their children under 13 in joining Facebook even though they know it violates our policy," he said in an email.

Parents obviously can't be the last resort, though. Facebook's chief technology officer Bret Taylor faced a grilling in May from the Senate commerce subcommittee for, among other things, the social network's failing to keep underage kids off of their site. If young children are able to set up a Facebook profile, critics say, they become easy targets for pedophiles and potentially child pornography rings. We ran a quick test, and it appears that Facebook still hasn't developed an age verification process that keeps underage users from signing up. However, age verification is a hard problem that Facebook says they're still working to solve.

"As many safety advocates note, it is difficult to implement age restrictions on the Internet and that there is no single solution to ensuring younger children don't circumvent a system or lie about their age," Facebook's Andrew Noyes says. "We appreciate the attention being given to this matter and believe this will provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, safety advocates and Internet services to focus on this area, with the ultimate goal of keeping young people of all ages safe online."

Still, skepticism mounts over whether Facebook would actually rather just change COPPA's rules, which were written long before Facebook in the late 1990s, than find a solution. Mark Zuckerberg took heat earlier this year for suggesting that these regulations ought to be changed. "That will be a fight we take on at some point," he said. Facebook's Noyes reiterated that point by telling us, "We remain supportive of the FTC's efforts to modernize COPPA so that companies can innovate and keep young people of all ages safe online." At the Senate hearings, however, one witness scolded Facebook's Taylor for not taking children's safety more seriously. "Instead of spending your money on hiring PR firms to take down your competitors, you should be spending it on developing innovative technology to protect our kids," she said. To swing the door back in the other direction, one of the First Monday story's authors, Microsoft researcher and NYU professor Dana Boyd, suggests that COPPA's backfiring. "It was meant to empower parents to have these conversations with their kids," says Boyd. "It was meant to encourage exactly what happens as a result of lying."

Creating a profile is not the be-all and end-all of access to Facebook, however. The social network has mechanisms in place that are designed to spot suspicious activity once you start poking around the site, uploading photos, sending friend requests and so forth. If their anti-abuse robots and cookies decide that you're underage, Facebook will close the account.

However, a lot can go wrong in the meantime. Parents and lawmakers alike worry that once they had created profiles, the kids would then innocently upload pictures that would end up on the screens of pedophiles prowling the social network. The company has been implementing custom-made Microsoft software than scans the site for potentially pornographic photos in an effort not only to deter but also identify pedophiles. They're also building technology to prevent bullying, after a number of young people have committed suicide after being teased on social networks.

Start-ups have also started building technology to address the age verification process. Boston-based Tru.ly uses a process that checks user-supplied data against private databases of the same government data used for things like credit scores, to confirm age information. If the data exist because you're not old enough to have a credit record, then you're denied access. You might also run into trouble if you're from another country, or if you're like Steve Jobs and simply try to avoid being tracked by the U.S. government altogether.

Of course, all of these systems fall apart when parents are helping their children get full access to Facebook and not keeping track of how they're using it. The problem of underage kids ending up on sites they shouldn't is also not just limited to Facebook, nor is it the specific responsibility of the government, the social network or parents to find a solution. Bad parenting doesn't help, though. And remember: bad things happen to kids with bad parents.

Lindsay Lohan sentenced to jail for 30 days - A judge on Wednesday sentenced Lindsay Lohan to serve 30 days in jail for a probation violation. Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner sentenced the actress for violating the terms of her release by being terminated from a community service assignment at a women's shelter.

The actress acknowledged she violated her probation.

Sautner imposed a complicated sentence on the actress, telling her that she will now have to perform all of her community service at the county morgue or risk serving an additional 270 days in jail.

The actress' sentence will be shortened due to jail overcrowding.

The judge also ordered Lohan to continue undergoing counseling sessions and kept the actress on a short leash. The judge told Lohan she must report back to court in December, January, February and March for updates.

Lohan will also get a new probation officer that Sautner said she has ordered to report any violations directly to the court. If Lohan fails to comply with the new sentence, Sautner said she would immediately send the starlet to jail for the remaining 270 days of her sentence.

It will Lohan's fifth jail sentence since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007. The 25-year-old last served 35 days on house arrest on a four month jail sentence.

Sautner revoked Lohan's probation at a hearing nearly two weeks ago.

The judge had asked prosecutors to calculate how long of a jail term the actress would have to serve if she is formally found in violation of her probation for misdemeanor drunken driving and theft cases.

Sautner, who is the fifth judge that Lohan has faced since her first arrest in 2007, has expressed exasperation with the actress and California's budget-strapped jail system.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office advocated jail time for the actress, however spokesman Frank Mateljan declined to provide further details.

Lohan's spokesman, Steve Honig, declined comment before the hearing.

The "Mean Girls" star has been reporting to the Los Angeles morgue regularly, which Sautner ordered her to do at the last court appearance. The judge had sentenced Lohan to serve 120 hours doing janitorial work at coroner's office in April, but expressed hope that the actress would benefit from working three times that amount of hours at a women's shelter.

Lohan was terminated from the shelter program after failing to show up nine times at the center. She told her probation officer the assignment was not fulfilling, according to the actress' probation report.

The actress' morgue service has not been without drama — she was turned away the first day after showing up 40 minutes late. She has shown up early several times since then. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter declined to characterize how Lohan's service was progressing Tuesday.

The former Disney star has been sent to jail, rehab, counseling and community service numerous times since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007. Her probation on that case is nearly over, but her release remains supervised after Lohan in May pleaded no contest to misdemeanor theft for taking a $2,500 necklace without permission in January.

Once a headlining actress, Lohan's court and personal troubles have overshadowed her career for years.

Ann Coulter: 'Our blacks are better than theirs blacks' - Republican blacks are better than Democrat blacks. In the mind of Ann Coulter, that’s a fact. Coulter made the “our blacks are better than their blacks” statement earlier this week on Fox News, and she stood by the claim last night while talking to Joy Behar.

Coulter said on Fox News:

“Our blacks are so much better than their blacks… To become a black Republican, you don’t just roll into it. You’re not going with the flow. You have fought against probably your family members, probably your neighbors, you have thought everything out and that’s why we have very impressive blacks in our party.”

According to the NY Daily News, Coulter points to Herman Cain, Michael Steele, and Allen West as examples of impressive black Republicans.

HLN’s Joy Behard asked Coulter if she believed ”all the African Americans who are Democrats are stupid?”

Coulter said:

“No. I’m saying Google Maxine Waters, Cynthia McKinney, John Conyers, and then Google Allen West, Michael Steele or Herman Cain. … Ours are more impressive. There’s no question about it.”

Coulter also claims that people are only racist against conservative African-Americans and not liberals. Coulter said:

“The only racism you hear in America is against conservative blacks.”

Coulter isn’t the only one pulling out the race card. Yesterday, Donald Trump accused Jon Stewart of making racist remarks against Herman Cain.

But Coulter’s claim that “the only racism you hear in America is against conservative blacks” doesn’t really hold up. I seem to remember seeing a sign somewhere before…

Sean Penn, Morgan Freeman, Alan Cummings, Janeane Garofalo, and several other liberal celebrities have condemned the tea party for being a racist organization.

Freeman said:

“Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What’s that mean? What underlines that? ‘Screw the country. We’re going to whatever we can to get this black man outta here.’”

You might not agree with Freeman or his like-minded celebrities, but saying that racism is only pointed in one direction seems a little short-sighted.

Khloe Kardashian Defends Sister Kim Kardashian - Don't mess with the Kardashian Klan. Shortly after Kim Kardashian announced the end of her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries, the E! reality star's outspoken younger sister Khloe addressed the inevitable backlash on Twitter.

"Reading some these comments are so hurtful. I'm grateful for our fans who understand and are being respectful," she wrote. "Hate is disgusting. Love is everything."
